VAGINOPLASTY – WHAT IS IT ?
A vaginoplasty is reconstructive plastic surgery that is carried out to correct the appearance and any malformation of the vaginal canal/lining or the vulvo-vaginal structure.
→ Damage may have been caused by a congenital illness (like vaginal atresia) or in specific cases following physical trauma or cancer.
A vaginoplasty is also recommended for women who have given birth mutliple times; for some women going through menopause; or women who simply have a weakened muscle structure.
WHAT HAPPENS DURING A VAGINOPLASTY PROCEDURE?
A vaginoplasty involves tightening and reshaping the pelvic floor muscles. It is also known as the vaginal rejuvenation procedure (“designer vagina”)
Childbirth can result in a distension of the vaginal muscles that, sadly, will then rarely go back to their original size and tonicity. This leads to an increase in the overall width of the vagina and a laxity in the muscles. Sexual pleasure can be affected for both partners. If the pelvic floor muscles slacken too much, they can lose their ability to hold and support other areas. This may, in turn, result in prolepses of the uterus, bladder and vagina.
A vaginoplasty is used for reconstructing a vagina that has been misshapened due to childbirth or as a result of natural aging. Symptoms of incontinence may be related to an over-distended vagina – the surgeon can often remedy both issues at the same time. This procedure is not intended to deal with problems relating to libido or a lack of orgasm.
The operation lasts about 1 hour and is carried out under a general anaesthetic. The patient will need 4-5 days to recover. The surgeon makes two parallel incisions along the vaginal cavity – a section may simply be removed and then sutures used to join the two edges or an additional fold may be added across the incisions.
POST PROCEDURE ?
Some pain may be experienced for a few days after the procedure. Analgesic will be prescribed over a number of days. Normal life and activities can usually resume 4-5 days following the vaginoplasty. Sexual activity should wait until 4 weeks have passed. Pregnancy is still possible following this procedure.
