BOTULINUM TOXIN – WHAT IS IT?
Botox® aids in smoothing out wrinkles.
It is a muscle relaxant that works on the neuromuscular junction in a given muscle.
This muscle relaxant is produced under the most stringent safety standards and is dosed according to internationally approved norms. It has been used in France since 1975 for medical applications in ophthalmology, ENT and neurology.
→ Since 2003 its use has been increased in the aesthetic medicine field for the treatment of frown lines, forehead wrinkles and “crow’s feet. “
HOW DOES A BOTOX® INJECTION WORK ?
The potential use of botulinum toxin in cosmetic procedures was discovered by accident in 1987. Dr Jean Carruthers, an eye doctor, was treating a patient for blepharospasm using a dilute solution of botulinum toxin and noticed an incidental improvement in her frown lines. Both she and her husband Dr Alistair Carruthers, a dermatologist, continued to research the concept and to perform clinical trials. The cosmetic use of botulinum toxin in the Unites States has had a huge impact and has made Allergan, the pharmaceutical company that markets it, famous. There are now also other similar products like Dysport® (by Ipsen) and Vistabel®.
Over time, the muscles of the face can become hypertonic or tense (often through stress) and this can lead to the appearance of deep wrinkles. By injecting a muscle relaxant like Botox®, the skin becomes smoother and wrinkles are reduced.
Botox® injections can reduce or even eliminate wrinkles whilst still maintaining a natural look.
They are often combined with hyaluronic acid injections. The Botox® has a smoothing effect (as it is a muscle relaxant) whilst the filler, hyaluronic acid, acts as a soft tissue augmentation agent– hence the utility of combining the two in the treatment of facial lines.
WHICH WRINKLES/LINES CAN BE TREATED USING BOTOX® ?
1) Horizontal forehead lines
By injecting Botox® into the forehead region (the frontalis muscle), lines can be smoothed out.
3) Crow’s feet
Botulinum toxin injections are an effective treatment for crow’s feet (the orbicularis oculi muscles) and help to “lift” the tail of the eyebrows.
5) Wrinkles around the mouth
Botulinum toxin injections are an effective treatment for lines at the corner of the mouth (the risorius muscle) and by injecting into the depressor anguli oris muscle can even lift the edges of the smile.
7) Wrinkles on the neck
Botulinum toxin injections into the platysma muscle are an effective treatment for a neck that has a loose or stringy appearance.
Results usually begin to be apparent after 3 days up to a maximum of 15 days after having been injected. Botulinum toxin is effective for up to around 4 to 6 months.
2) Frown lines
Botulinum toxin injections are an effective treatment in the glabella region (the corrugator and procerus muscles) for frown lines.
4) Wrinkles above the mouth
By injecting Botox® into the region around the mouth (the orbicularis oris muscle), lines on the upper lip can effectively be smoothed out.
6) Wrinkles on the chin
Any “orange peel” aspect on the chin will disappear when the mentalis muscle is injected with Botox®.
